What Type of Emergency Kit is Best for Me and My Family?

So how does one go about selecting the right emergency kit? • How many people will I need to support in the event of a disaster?

Types of Emergency Preparedness Kits: Bucket Kits, Backpack Kits, and a Fanny Pack Kit

Bucket Kits (Home Base Emergency Kit, Basic Bucket Emergency Kit) are 5 gallon crush resistant containers with durable carrying handle designed to store all of your emergency supplies. They are extremely durable and have the best change of protecting your supplies when a disaster strikes. The bucket itself converts into a port-a-potty and comes with a snap on toilet seat (provided). Emergency Preparedness Bucket Kits provide you with the best protection when you are able to remain in your home following a disaster.

Backpacks Kits (Home Pack Emergency Kit, Basic Backpack Emergency Kit) are made of durable nylon. Backpacks are ideal when you need to move from one location to another. They are most useful in grab-and-go situations where you need to leave your home following a disaster. Backpacks Kits can be stored almost anywhere including your home, office, car, School, or RV.

Fanny Pack Kit (3 Day, 1 Day)  is smaller in size and is designed to carry supplies for 1 person in the event of a disaster. It attaches around your waist and is most convenient when storage space is limited. Cars, offices, and dorm rooms are ideal places to store Fanny Pack Kits. Also consider taking a Fanny Pack Kit with you when you travel.

Emergency Preparedness Kit Versions: FEMA Compliant and Basic

FEMA Compliant Emergency Kits (Home Base Emergency Kit, Home Pack Emergency Kit, Homestead Ultimate Emergency Kit) come with a comprehensive set of supplies that exceed the FEMA guidelines. They are designed to include everything you need in the event of a disaster. Once purchased, you can essentially store this kit away for 5 Years.  You and your family will sleep easier knowing that your are fully equipped should disaster strike.

Basic Emergency Kits (Basic Bucket Emergency Kit, Basic Backpack Emergency Kit) contain only essentials like food, water, emergency blankets, waterproof ponchos, and a few other items. These kits cost less than their FEMA compliant counterparts and do not contain all of the supplies you need in the event of an emergency. The assumption with these kits is that you plan to add other supplies on hand at home, and plan to add those items to this kit to make it complete.

For the Home

Unless you plan to supplement your kit with emergency supplies you already own, we recommend the Home Base Emergency Preparedness Kit. This kit exceeds the guidelines outlined by FEMA.  In addition, you should consider some of our other specialty kits. If you have a dog and/or cats, we recommend adding one of our Pet Kits. Also, don't forget fire extinguishers for your home. We recommend 2 for each floor.

For your Car(s)

You never know where you will be when a disaster or emergency situation will occur and since we spend most of our time in or around our cars in makes sense to store supplies there. With that said, we recommend storing a Fanny Pack Kit in each of your vehicles.

For Work

Working family members spend a significant amount of their time at work. If a disaster strikes when you're working, you will need supplies. We recommend storing a Fanny Pack Kit at each of your work location. If your work location already carries emergency preparedness supplies, you may want to opt for the less expensive 1 Day Fanny Pack Kit.

All of these supplies may seem like a lot, but consider how much you spend each month on health insurance. Getting the proper kits, in the location you visit the most, will reduce anxiety, fear and give you piece of mind. In addition, losses will be reduced and you may even save the life of a loved one.
